How VA disability pay works
- Payments are tax-free at the federal and state level.
- Ratings are set in 10% increments from 10% to 100% based on how service-connected conditions affect daily life.
- Additional amounts are added for a spouse, dependent children, or dependent parents once your rating is 30% or higher.
- Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) can increase your payment for severe disabilities like loss of use of a limb or the need for aid and attendance.
- COLA adjustments happen every December 1 and match the Social Security COLA.
